I wonder if they’d have done better there.

That move to drama seems like a big mistake in retrospect.

But the placement was fine for “Bohemian Rhapsody”? Both films should receive the same treatment with placement, which the Globes decided to do in the end. One greatly benefited from it, while the other one didn’t.

Whether in comedy or drama, it deserved best film, best actor and actress, best song. Cuaron can take best director.

The Globes just didn’t want to look predictable or maybe the bribery thing is true

FYC Emily Blunt (Mary Poppins Returns) and Lady Gaga (A Star is Born) for best actress

Anyway, I love the fact that Gaga was happy for Glenn. Obviously, Gaga wasn’t going to beat Close cos her overdue narrative is too strong to ignore.

I feel sad for Emily Blunt. She looked so unhappy the momet Colman was announced winner in their category

I doubt it would have done better. They loved Green Book enough to give it their Screenplay prize, a category A STAR IS BORN was snubbed in.

And if you are comfortable enough to think they would have given Best Actress to Gaga over Olivia Colman…sure. I don’t see a universe or scenario where that would have ever happened. But if you all think so….

Question: were you under the impression the Globes would go for Gaga over Close initially?

Yes. Colman is Colman though. Ain’t no way she was losing Comedy Actress.

And seeing as Gaga couldn’t beat Close, coupled with all the other losses, I don’t see how A Star is Born would have won Comedy Picture, Actress and Actor.

I feel HFPA’s placements were designed to give their favourites the upper hand

Don’t push it. Gaga would have definitely won over Colman.

If A Star Is Born could lose to a movie like Bohemian Rhapsody, which was perceived as almost a non-existent threat, then I think placing it under Comedy/Musical would have made no difference considering how strong the movies like Green Book and The Favourite are.

Placing it under Drama was a logical decision, the outcome was unexpected but that decision prior to the outcome being revealed was still logical.

There is no way. In hell. That was ever gonna happen.

    Just stop.

    “Gaga coudn’t even beat Close”…

Some people here keep underestimating Close at this point. No way Colman will win the Oscar this year. Gaga was the frontrunner, not Colman. And if Glenn did beat Gaga, that makes her the frontrunner per say. There’s no way around it. Gaga was a bigger threat to Glenn. And by beating her, Glenn basically cleared the race for her Oscar (unless SAGs and CCAs yield new wins).
