Something that we have not really talked about is how Regina King was snubbed at BAFTA by all branches. Unlike at the Oscars, the BAFTA acting nominees are not decided by only the acting branch; all branches vote in the nominating phase for the acting categories. King got her Oscar nomination with only the acting branch voting; maybe she would have gotten a BAFTA nomination if only the acting branch had been voting. With the entire academy voting, she did not get a BAFTA nomination, which bodes poorly for the entire academy voting on the Oscar winner. That kind of discrepancy does happen, like when the directors’ branch snubbed Ben Affleck for director, but he won BAFTA with the whole academy voting.

"I don't even believe in god, but I'm going to thank her tonight."

Truth is Regina King doesn’t even deserve it. It’s such a shame that King and Ali are going to win.

Considering the fact that two other undeserving contenders (Close and Malek) are winning the lead categories, the academy should just save themselves the embarrassment and reward Rachel Weisz and Richard E Grant. If not Grant, then they should go with Adam Driver. That’s another great performance there. Ali already has an undeserved win. His Oscar should have gone to Jeff Bridges or Dev Patel.

For the other lady that’s riding the overdue narrative, I say NO AMY ADAMS please. As much as I do not wish Regina King wins, I can bear her win but I can’t stand Amy Adams winning.

Lady Gaga (A Star is Born) should win best actress

I finally saw “If Beale Street Could Talk” and let me preface by saying why isn’t this movie nominated for more Oscars – especially best picture and director. At least it got nominated for its beautiful, beautiful score.

Now, trying to stick to the thread topic, Regina King plays Sharon Rivers with such yearning compassion and empathy. I do love “The Favourite” ladies and Marina De Tavira in “Roma” – all three would make fine winners. And if Regina King does win Best Supporting Actress it would be well-deserved. She gave such a lovely, tender performance. I think I finally decided to select her in my Oscar predictions.

So I guess Weisz is winning the Oscar?

Fuck, please don’t tell me Amy is losing for the second time to Weisz pretending to be supporting (as fantastic as the latter was in The Favourite).

Perhaps Rachel Weisz would be Amy Adams’ Hilary Swank.

I’m predicting Weisz now a la Rylance.

I am still predicting Regina King but I wouldn’t be unhappy at all if Rachel Weisz were to win. Interestingly when the winner is announced – if it is one of these two – we will have wait for their entire first name to be announced! (I still remember when Richard Burton bounced up thinking he had won and the winner actually was Richard Dreyfuss!).

Supporting actress is now King vs. Weisz. I am still predicting King as there were other factors contributing to Weisz winning BAFTA. Either would be a superb Oscar winner for their wonderful performances!

    Why King?

She has a very brief role.

Her film is not up for Best Picture.

She did not score a BAFTA or SAG nomination. The only performance to accomplish that was Marcia Gay Harden.
