Best Actor took a shock when Rami Malek won for Bohemian rhapsody at the Globes last week.

Will Radio Ga Ga win? Will the co-star of Gaga win? Or will it be an upset from Cheney?

I expected Rami Malek to win the Globe and I think he will win the rest of the awards this season – SAG, BAFTA and the Oscar.

Really the UK has a lot of the world’s famous cultural icons. Seeming Mercury was one of the most famous people in the world at one point in time, anyone who gets nominated would for the Oscar would have to win.

I mean look at it this way, this decade there have been many performances by actors playing British cultural icons and the Academy has nominated people playing notable Brits or cultural icons over the past eight years a lot:

2010 — Carey Mulligan was nominated for An Education but you can hardly say that Jenny Mellor is a famous Brit or icon around the world. She did win the BAFTA however (Mulligan not Mellor)
2011 — Colin Firth as King George VI in the King’s Speech (a win against Mark Zuckerberg and yes George is a famous British King around the world and British Historical Icon) and Helena Bonham Carter as the Queen Mother (yes an Icon and famous member of the Royal family until she died). Both performances won the BAFTA but only Firth won the Oscar.
2012 — Gary Oldman as the famous British spy character George Smiley in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (lost both Oscar and BAFTA). Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher (won everything and Malek’s performance as Mercury is on the same level as Streep’s as Thatcher). Kenneth Branagh as Laurence Olivier (lost awards but was nominated for both BAFTA and Oscar)
2013 — Naomi Watts as Maria Bennett (really the woman who survived the tsunami was Spanish but she was made a Brit for some reason in the film?)
2014 — None (Judi Dench played the British residing Irish woman Philomena Lee in Philomena which got award nods)
2015 — Eddie Redmayne as Stephen Hawking (won and is on the same scale of a performance as Streep as Thatcher and Malek as Mercury. Again a world famous Brit who is a Science icon). Felicity Jones as Jane Hawking (didn’t win but was a Brit known for being married to him).Benedict Cumberbatch as Alan Turing (a famous Mathematician in the world and a famous Brit).
    2016 — None
    2017 — None
2018 — Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill (win, again on the scale of Malek, Redmayne and Streep)
2019 — Rami Malek in Bohemian Rhapsody?

Total number of people playing famous Brit icons and people nominated over 9 years = 11 (14 depending on your persuasion)
Years no nomination = 2010, 2013 and 2014 (depending on your persuasion), 2016 and 2017

After Critics Choice Awards, this one is really between Malek and Bale. Bye, bye Bradley Cooper.

Rami Malek will win, and deserves to win.
